Poutine…with a little twist! This VEGAN POUTINE with Chorizo Chili Gravy is anything but boring. The cheese curds are homemade and they’re actually SUPER EASY to whip together, nut-free, and require no blending!! Let me walk you through the making of this little bomb diggity creation so you can enjoy it as much as we did!

Poutine with French Fries and Sweet Potato Fries

    What is Poutine?

Poutine is often identified as a quintessential Canadian food. It traditionally consists of french fries, cheese curds, and brown gravy. To maintain the texture of the fries, the cheese curds and gravy are added immediately before serving. The hot gravy is usually poured over room temperature cheese curds so they’re warmed without melting. Many variations of poutine exist, just like this one! Some would even say that poutine has emerged as a new dish classification in its own right.

The Making of Chorizo Chili Gravy

The gravy for this poutine is a little different than a traditional brown gravy normally used for this dish. It consists of vegan chorizo, onion, spices like chili powder and cumin, vegetable stock, and chili beans. It’s really easy and comes together in under 15 minutes. You just need a skillet and a whisk!

    • Start by melting a little butter in your skillet
    • Add the diced onion and sauté for a few minutes
    • Add the vegan chorizo and stir to combine
    • Mix in the flour and spices
    • Whisk in the veg stock
    • Add a can of chili beans (optional) and simmer for a few minutes to allow sauce to thicken

Inspiration for this gravy came from here

How to Make the Cheese Curds for this Vegan Poutine

For the cheese, just whisk together soy milk, coconut oil, tapioca starch, apple cider vinegar, and sea salt over medium heat. As you continue to whisk, the mixture will become thicker and start to combine and ‘stretch’. Once it’s stretchy, just transfer to the fridge or freezer while you make everything else.

    A Few Things To Note

Make sure your soy milk is PLAIN and UNSWEETENED! Check the back ingredients label. You don’t want any added sugars as this will make your cheese taste slightly sweet.

Also, make sure the coconut oil is REFINED so that is doesn’t taste like coconuts.

For Another Twist – Try Sweet Potato Fries!

Seriously, this gravy is soooo good with sweet potato fries. You should have enough gravy if you want to mix it up and do both regular french fries AND sweet potato fries.

I made homemade french fries and used store-bought sweet potato fries. Honestly though, with a sauce this good, nobody is going to care! So feel free to skip that greasy mess and save time by grabbing the frozen ones that just need a little time in the oven. You could even do TOTS or WAFFLE FRIES!! Actually, I wonder if onion rings would be good? Ok, I’m getting off topic, but these ARE possibilities!! If I try them, I’ll report back.
